DescriptionElastin is a macromolecular polymer synthesized by mesenchymal cells as a soluble precursor, tropoelastin. It is the predominant component of elastic fibers within the extracellular matrix responsible for the elastic properties of tissues. Prepared by extraction with hot oxalic acid. On SDS-PAGE, it gives a smear with molecular weights between 5 and 60 kDa.
