DescriptionA tetradecapeptide that activates a cascade of biochemical reactions including Ins(1,4,5)P3-induced mobilization of intracellular Ca2+, Na+ and K+ fluxes, protein kinase C activation, and cAMP production. Acts as a mitogen and growth factor for cells in culture. The bombesin receptor in Swiss 3T3 cells is a G-protein linked neuropeptide receptor. Stimulates phospholipase D and phospholipase A2 activity in Swiss 3T3 fibroblasts. Increases the release of acetylcholine from myenteric plexus neurons via a PKC-dependent mechanism. Stimulates pancreatic growth, hypothermia, hypoglycemia, and satiety in mammals. Stimulates hormone secretion by the gastrointestinal tract, including gastrin, cholecystokinin, insulin, glucagon, prolactin, and growth hormone.
