DescriptionAnti-Tyrosine Hydroxylase Antibody
Alternate Names
  • Tyrosine 3-hydroxylase
  • tyrosine 3-monooxygenase
  • tyrosine hydroxylase
Background InformationTyrosine Hydroxylase plays an important role in the physiology of adrenergic neurons. It is the first and rate-limiting enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of the catecholamines Dopamine and Norepinephrine from tyrosine. TH is, therefore, a useful marker for dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurons. The enzymatic activity of TH requires ferrous ions as cofactors and is believed to be regulated by phosphorylation. At least four isoforms of human TH have been identified which result from alternative splicing.

Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThe protein encoded by this gene is involved in the conversion of tyrosine to dopamine. It is the rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of catecholamines, hence plays a key role in the physiology of adrenergic neurons. Mutations in this gene have been associated with autosomal recessive Segawa syndrome. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been noted for this gene. [provided by RefSeq]
Gene Symbol
  • TYH
Purification MethodAntigen Affinity Purified
UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: Plays an important role in the physiology of adrenergic neurons.
CATALYTIC ACTIVITY: L-tyrosine + tetrahydrobiopterin + O2 = 3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine + 4a-hydroxytetrahydrobiopterin.
COFACTOR: Fe2+ ion.
ENZYME REGULATION: Phosphorylation leads to an increase in the catalytic activity.
PATHWAY: Catecholamine biosynthesis; dopamine biosynthesis; dopamine from L-tyrosine: step 1/2.
TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Mainly expressed in the brain and adrenal glands.
INVOLVEMENT IN DISEASE: Defects in TH are the cause of autosomal recessive Segawa syndrome [MIM:605407]; also known as DOPA-responsive dystonia. Typically, it begins in childhood or adolescence with progressive difficulty in walking and, in some cases, spasticity. Some cases present with parkinsonian symptoms in infancy and are referred to as autosomal recessive infantile parkinsonism.
SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the biopterin-dependent aromatic amino acid hydroxylase family.
Molecular Weight~ 58 kDa
