Millipak® Filter

0.22 µm membrane filter for particulate-free and bacteria-free water at the point of dispense

Overview

Millipak® membrane technology was originally designed for sterilizing filtration of pharmaceutical products and culture media. Considered as a best-in-class, proven product, it has been selected by Lab Water to benefit scientists’ stringent requirements for pure water. Millipak® filter is designed for the removal of particulates and microorganisms from purified water. It is connected to the outlet of the water delivery point such as the PODs of Milli-Q® systems. The protective bell provides protection against intrusion of airborne bacteria contamination during dispensing.

It is good laboratory practice to keep the protective bell in place and to discard at least 1 liter of water before first usage every day. This eliminates any bacteria that might have developed during the night in the water volume downstream of the membrane. The connection of tubing at the outlet of the Millipak® should be avoided as numerous experimentations have demonstrated that such tubing leads inevitably to bacteria development and water contamination.

Millipak® • Unique technology

Millipak® membrane filters use the unique, clean stacked disc design. This eliminates the risks of particulate-release by woven downstream supports found in many pleated membrane capsules. Millipak® stacked disc technology offers several benefits.

  • High water flow and a resistance to pressure variations without risk of membrane rupture thanks the flat 0.22 µm membrane, supported by a rigid plastic disc with channels.
  • No risk of contamination that may occur when the membrane is bound by solvent as the membranes are heat sealed on the support.
  • Minimum “dead volume” thanks to a high surface even with small volumes.

Millipak® 0.22 µm filtration membranes have been validated for bacteria removal following the HIMA rules, using a challenge with Pseudomonas diminuta at 107 organisms / cm² of membrane. The bacteria retention efficiency has been correlated during validation studies with the non-destructive bubble point and air diffusion tests. This allows the verification of bacteria retention for each device at the end of the manufacturing process.

Quality certificate

Millipak® filters are tested to ensure that they will not contaminate the processed liquid by extractible or other contaminants. A Certificate of Quality is delivered with every Millipak® filter where the following Quality Assurance parameters are reported:

  • Good Manufacturing Practices
  • ISO® 9001 Quality Standard
  • Non-fiber releasing
  • Components materials toxicity test
  • Membrane Bacterial Retention
  • USP bacterial endotoxin test
  • Hydraulic stress test
  • Flow rate and pressure drop measure
  • USP oxidizable substances test
  • Gravimetric extractible test
  • Sterility test (for products delivered sterile)
