Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThis gene encodes a member of the serine/threonine protein kinase family. The encoded protein, a component of a cytokine-activated protein complex that is an inhibitor of the essential transcription factor NF-kappa-B complex, phosphorylates sites that trigger the degradation of the inhibitor via the ubiquination pathway, thereby activating the transcription factor.

  • IKBKA
  • IkBKA
  • TCF16
  • IKK1
  • IKK-A
  • IKK-alpha
Purification MethodProtein G Purified
UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: O15111 # Phosphorylates inhibitors of NF-kappa-B thus leading to the dissociation of the inhibitor/NF-kappa-B complex and ultimately the degradation of the inhibitor. Also phosphorylates NCOA3. Phosphorylates 'Ser-10' of histone H3 at NF-kappa-B- regulated promoters during inflammatory responses triggered by cytokines.
SIZE: 745 amino acids; 84654 Da
SUBUNIT: Preferentially found as a heterodimer with IKK-beta but also as an homodimer. Directly interacts with IKK-gamma/NEMO and TRPC4AP (By similarity). Heterodimers form the active complex. The tripartite complex can also bind to MAP3K14/NIK, MEKK1, IKAP and IKB-alpha-p65-p50 complex. A weak interaction with TRAF2 cannot be excluded. Part of a complex composed of NCOA2, NCOA3, IKKB, IKBKG and CREBBP. Interacts with NALP2. May interact with MAVS/IPS1.
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm. Nucleus. Note=Shuttles between the cytoplasm and the nucleus.
TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Widely expressed.
PTM: Phosphorylated by MAP3K14/NIK, AKT and to a lesser extent by MEKK1, and dephosphorylated by PP2A. Autophosphorylated.
SIMILARITY: SwissProt: O15111 ## Belongs to the protein kinase superfamily. Ser/Thr protein kinase family. IkappaB kinase subfamily. & Contains 1 protein kinase domain.
Molecular Weight85 kDa
