Revision18-September-2008 RFH
DescriptionCalcitonin is a single-chain peptide hormone of 32 amino acid residues with a disulfide bridge between cysteines at positions 1 and 7. It is produced in the parafollicular C cells of the thyroid gland and acts to stimulate bone formation by osteoblasts and inhibits bone resorption. Part of the effect of calcitonin appears to be mediated through increasing cAMP concentrations in osteoclasts.
