Background InformationThe metabotropic glutamate receptors belong to a family of G protein-coupled receptors that have been divided into 3 groups based on their sequence homology, putative signal transduction mechanisms, and pharmacologic properties. mGluR2 belongs to the Group II. It is widely expressed in different regions of fetal and the adult brain. Ligand binding to GluR2 induces a conformation change in the receptor, which triggers signaling to modulate the activity of down-stream effectors, mainly via the inhibition of adenylate cyclase activity. Activation of mGluR2 leads to inhibition of glutamate release at the synaptic junction
