Alternate Names
  • Leukemia inhibitory factor receptor
  • LIF receptor
  • LIF-R
  • D-factor

  • GP190
  • LIFR
Background InformationThe LIF receptor is critical in modern mouse stem cell maintenance as the receptor for LIF, the embryonic stem cell (ESC) growth factor that maintains pluripotency and self renewal in mouse ES cells, however physiologically, the importance of LIF-R in real mouse development has been less clear. LIF receptor does play a signaling role and when cleaved its extracellular portion can act as a decoy receptor and block exogenous LIF from performing its function on ES cells. LIF receptor is expressed in multiple tissues in the mouse during development from the liver to the lung and brain. LIF receptor also is important in immune responses and in the stimulation of the interferon response to viral infection. Also LIF receptor has recently been identified as a metastasis suppressor that functions through the Hippo-YAP pathway in humans.
