Application Data
DescriptionPurified rabbit polyclonal antibody. Recognizes the ~34 kDa Cdc2/Cdk1 protein.
BackgroundThe cdc2 gene was originally isolated using cell division cycle mutants in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The gene was shown to encode a protein with a molecular weight of ~34 kDa and had all of the properties of protein kinase. The cdc2 gene was subsequently shown to be functionally homologous to the Cdc28 gene in the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which was demonstrated to encode a protein (serine/threonine) kinase. The Cdc2 kinase is now known to be a key regulator of the eukaryotic cell cycle and is believed to act in both G1 and G2 phases. The activity of the catalytic subunit p34 is controlled by interactions with other proteins, namely the mitotic cyclins and p13suc1, and by phosphorylation-dephosphorylation. The kinase activity of dc2 is most readily studied by using histone H1 as a phosphorylation substrate in vitro. cdc2 is also referred to as cdk1.
