      OverviewA low molecular weight non-glycosylated basic protein of the cystatin superfamily of cysteine protease inhibitors that it is freely filtered by the glomerular membrane. Serum levels of cystatin C can be used as a specific and sensitive marker of glomerular filtration rate. Protects organisms against undesirable proteolysis by endogenous or exogenous enzymes. Thought to be linked to many disease processes including Alzheimer’s disease, hereditary cerebral hemorrhage, and lung cancer.
