      Alternate Names
      • B-cell associated protein
      • B-cell receptor-associated protein BAP37
      • Repressor of estrogen receptor activity
      • Prohibitin 2
Background InformationThe prohibitin family of mitochondrial proteins regulate replicative lifespan. In the mitochondria, Prohibin 2 (PHB2) is thought to be involved in mitochondrial respiration activity and in aging. PHB2 translocates to the nucleus in an estrogen receptor (ER)--dependent manner, where it protects sister-chromatid cohesion in mitosis. PHB2 functions as an ER-selective coregulator that represses the activity of estrogens. PHB2 is essential for proper mitotic progression since it protects the centromeric cohesion from phosphorylation by Plk1 during early mitosis. PHB2 also reepresses transcription by recruiting histone deacetylases.

      Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryProhibitin 2, also known as PHB2 is a protein that is found in the mitochondrial inner membrane. It is often expressed in the mitochondria of HeLa cells; however, it moves to the nucleus when estrogen receptors are present. Diseases associated with this protein are the diseases of aging. UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFunction: Acts as a mediator of transcriptional repression by nuclear hormone receptors via recruitment of histone deacetylases By similarity. Functions as an estrogen receptor (ER)-selective coregulator that potentiates the inhibitory activities of antiestrogens and represses the activity of estrogens. Competes with NCOA1 for modulation of ER transcriptional activity. Probably involved in regulating mitochondrial respiration activity and in aging.
Subunit structure: Interacts with PHB, ESR1, HDAC1 and HDAC5 By similarity.
Subcellular location: Mitochondrion inner membraneBy similarity. CytoplasmBy similarity. NucleusBy similarity.
Developmental stage: Levels of expression in fibroblasts decrease heterogeneously during cellular aging.
Induction: Expression increases approximately 3-fold upon entry into G1 phase compared to other phases of the cell cycle. Also induced following inhibition of mitochondrial protein synthesis by thiamphenicol.
Sequence similarities: Belongs to the prohibitin family
