Background InformationARL13B/ARL2L1 is an important neuronal developmental protein, as well as, a cilium-specific protein required for the control of the microtubule-based ciliary axoneme structure. ARL13B/ARL2L1 is required for proper patterning in neural development during neural tube formation, and ARL13B/ARL2L1 is critical for cerebral cortex development and the initial polarization of radial glia scaffold, the first step in cortex development. ARL13B/ARL2L1 also controls the migration and placement of post mitotic interneurons. ARL13B/ARL2L1 is found in cellular projections and cilium and is widely expressed in the developing system as well in the gut. ARL13B/ARL2L1 also is a member of the small GTPase superfamily as it binds GTP but does not cleave it.
