Multipotent Rodent Stem Cells - Synthetic Laminin Peptide for Rat Neural Stem Cells
Synthetic laminin peptide for rat neural stem cell research
We have reported that several synthetic laminin peptides can be used in place of a laminin protein ECM coating for stem cell culture. Here, rat hippocampal neural stem cells grown on tissue culture plates coated with these peptides display common neural stem cell markers and possess the capacity to differentiate down both glial and neural lineages.
Multipotent stem cells are capable of differentiating into a variety of cellular subtypes based on the tissue of isolation and, as such, are highly useful in studies of stem cell differentiation. Historically, rodent multipotent stem cells have been an attractive cell model system for high throughput screening and drug discovery research due to their unique properties and robust growth characteristics.

Merck offers a wide selection of both mouse and rat neural and mesenchymal stem cell lines, differentiation kits, expansion media, antibodies, ECMs and reagents to enhance this area of stem cell biology.

Neural Stem Cells

Rat Hippocampal Neural Stem Cells
Rat primary neural stem cells isolated from the hippocampus of adult Fisher 344 rats. These self-renewing cells possess the capacity to differentiate into neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. Adult NSCs are extremely rare and are believed to reside only in discrete regions of the hippocampus and the subventricular zone. Due to their therapeutic promise, considerable attention has been focused on identifying the sources of stem cells, the signals that regulate their proliferation and the specification of neural stem cells towards more differentiated cell lineages. See how the CellASIC™ System has been used with our rat hippocampal neural stem cells to monitor neural stem cell growth and differentiation in real time.
Mouse Neural Stem Cells
Ready-to-use mouse primary neural stem cells isolated from the cortices or spinal cord of embryonic day 15-18 (E15-E18) C57/BL6 mice. These primary neural stem cells may be used for a variety of research applications including drug development, for studies of neurotoxicity, neurogenesis, electrophysiology, neurotransmitter and receptor functions and CNS diseases and disorders.

Mesenchymal Stem Cell

Rat Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Merck provides ready-to-use primary rat mesenchymal stem cells isolated from the bone marrow of adult Fisher 344 rats. Each lot of primary rat mesenchymal stem cells has been validated for high level of expression of two MSC markers (integrin b1 and CD54) and for their self-renewal and multilineage differentiation capacities as demonstrated by their ability to differentiate down adipocyte and osteocyte lineages.
