Overview
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a progressive nerve disorder caused by the autoimmune destruction of the insulating myelin layer surrounding neurons in the brian and spinal cord. When the myelin is damaged or destroyed, nerve messages are sent more slowly and less efficiently. Patches of scar tissue, called plaques, form over the affected areas, further disrupting nerve communication. The symptoms of multiple sclerosis occur when the brain and spinal cord nerves no longer communicate properly with other parts of the body. MS causes a wide variety of symptoms and can affect vision, balance, strength, sensation, coordination, memory, and bodily functions in over 2.5 million people world-wide. EMD-Millipore has developed key antibodies and stains for the study of Multiple Sclerosis pathways and the resulting histopathology.
