Background InformationMATE1 is part of our innate metabolism and functions as multi-substrate small molecule transporter. MATE1 is widely expressed in many tissues and is found especially found in luminal membranes of urinary tubules, bile caniculi and brush border membranes. MATE1 is the cellular transporter for tetraethylammonium (TEA), 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP), cimetidine, N-methylnicotinamide (NMN), metformin, creatinine, guanidine, procainamide, topotecan, estrone sulfate, cephalosporin, cephalexin and cephradin, and MATE1 often mediates the final excretion step for toxic organic cations. In disease treatments, it also is the transporter for the uptake of various anti-cancer drugs like acyclovir and ganciclovir but also toxins like Paraquat (a potent herbicide).
