BackgroundGlucose transporter 2 (Glut-2), a facilitative glucose transporter, is a transmembrane protein that facilitates transport of glucose in the cell in an energy-independent fashion. The Glut-2 isoform mediates the bidirectional transport of glucose by the hepatocyte and is partly responsible for the movement of glucose out of absorptive epithelial cells into the circulation in the small intestine and kidney. This isoform may also comprise part of the glucose-sensing mechanism of the insulin-producing β-cells of the pancreas.
