Background InformationCD39 (EC 3.6.1.5; also known as Ecto-apyrase, Ecto-ATPase 1, Ecto-ATPDase1 , Ecto-ATP diphosphohydrolase 1, Ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 1, Lymphoid cell activation antigen, NTPDase 1) is encoded by the Entpd1 or Cd39 gene (Entrez Gene ID 12495) in murine species. CD39 is a cell surface nucleotide-metabolizing enzyme that hydrolyzes extracellular purine NTP and NDP. E. coli infection is reported to induce CD39 promoter activity in macrophages, resulting in an upregulated CD39 expression during sepsis in mice, while CD39 knockdown increases mortality among mice with polymicrobial sepsis (PMID 25318479). Anti-CD39, clone 5E12 binds the murine CD39 (P55772) extracellular domain and is demonstrated to selectively stain murine macroglia by flow cytometry (PMID 22863620).
