Revision13-May-2008 RFH
DescriptionRecombinant, mouse interleukin-1β expressed in E. coli. Suppresses apoptosis in rat ovarian follicles. Involved in inflammatory and immune responses and promotes wound healing. Interleukin-1 is a protein produced by stimulated macrophages and many other cell types. The following biological activities are attributed to IL-1: activation of T cells resulting in the production of IL-2 and expression of IL-2 receptors; initiation of Acute Phase Response by induction of hepatic protein synthesis; increased proteolysis of muscle proteins, amino acid mobilization, and caloric and oxygen utilization; induction of bone resorption; stimulation of fibroblast proliferation; induction of slow-wave sleep; fever production; induction of prostaglandin and leukotriene production; stimulation of thymocyte proliferation; induction of B cell proliferation and maturation and increased immunoglobulin synthesis; induction of collagenase and other proteinases in synovial fibroblasts and articular chrondrocytes, suggesting a role in pathological states such as arthritis; activation of neutrophils. 1 µg is equivalent to 1.1 x 106 WHO units.
