Revision07-January-2014 JSW
DescriptionSynthetic bacteriostatic antibiotic that inhibits the translation of RNA to protein by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, blocking the peptidyl transferase reaction. Chloramphenicol resistance is encoded by the resistance gene cat, whose product, chloramphenicol acetyltransferase, inactivates the antibiotic via acetylation. Typically used at 30-50 µg/ml for selection of chloramphenicol-resistant Escherichia coli.
