DescriptionMouse monoclonal antibody. Recognizes the Lewis b carbohydrate chain.
BackgroundBlood group antigens are a group of molecules formed by sequential addition of saccharides to carbohydrate side chains of lipids and proteins and are detected on erythrocytes, certain epithelial cells and in secretions of some individuals. A, B and H antigens are synthesized by erythrocytes and integrated into their cell membranes. Lewis antigens are not synthesized by erythrocytes but can be absorbed from the plasma onto the surface of red blood cells. Subtle differences in the composition and arrangement of the sugars in the chains are sufficient to generate these distinct specificities. Lewis b may be detected in gastrointestinal and colorectal tumors and pancreatic cancer.
