Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThis gene encodes cytochrome c, a component of the electron transport chain in mitochondria. The heme group of cytochrome c accepts electrons from the b-c1 complex and transfers electrons to the cytochrome oxidase complex. Cytochrome c is also involved in initiation of apoptosis. Upon release of cytochrome c to the cytoplasm, the protein binds apoptotic protease activating factor which activates the apoptotic initiator procaspase 9. Many cytochrome c pseudogenes exist, scattered throughout the human genome.

UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: P99999 # Plays a role in apoptosis. Suppression of the anti- apoptotic members or activation of the pro-apoptotic members of the Bcl-2 family leads to altered mitochondrial membrane permeability resulting in release of cytochrome c into the cytosol. Binding of cytochrome c to Apaf-1 triggers the activation of caspase-9, which then accelerates apoptosis by activating other caspases.
SIZE: 105 amino acids; 11749 Da
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Mitochondrion matrix.
PTM: Binds 1 heme group per subunit.
SIMILARITY: SwissProt: P99999 ## Belongs to the cytochrome c family.
