Liquid Filtration for Sterile Filtration

Choosing the right membrane is critical to the success of the liquid sterile filtration within your process. You must be sure to choose the right pore size, media material, and membrane specifications in order to optimize your yields, process economics and product viability. Merck understands your complex needs and processes and offers a wide range of membrane options to fit your specifications.

Choosing the Right Membrane

Choosing the right membrane is critical to the success of the liquid sterile filtration within your process. You must be sure to choose the right pore size, media material, and membrane specifications in order to optimize your yields, process economics and product viability. Merck understands your complex needs and processes and offers a wide range of membrane options to fit your specifications.

  • Durapore® hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes provide high sterility assurance, low extractables, high capacity and throughput, and superior robustness. Our PVDF membrane comes in a wide range of pore sizes to fit your filtration needs and offers broad chemical compatibility.
  • Millipore Express® SHF is a single layer (0.2 um) polyethersulfone (PES) membrane that provides high sterility assurance and extremely high flowrates.
  • Millipore Express® SHC is a dual layer (0.5/0.2 um) polyethersulfone (PES) membrane which provides high sterility assurance and high capacity.
  • Millipore Express® SHR is a 0.1 um single layer (0.1 um) polyethersulfone (PES) membrane that provides high flowrates for superior process efficiency and economy.
  • Millipore Express® SHR with Prefilter is a dual layer (0.5/0.1 um) polyethersulfone (PES) membrane that provides high flowrates and high capacity.

Choosing the Right Format

Choosing the right format for your sterile filter is also an extremely important decision to make to optimize your sterile filtration process. Merck’s high quality membrane filters are available in cartridge formats and a wide range of self-contained disposable configurations. Gamma-compatible and sterile options are available and are ideal for value-added applications.

Cartridge Filters are commonly used for larger processes requiring more filtration area and/or lower unit operating cost. Cartridge filters are used in conjunction with stainless steel housings and can safely withstand multiple steam-in-place cycles. Merck cartridge filters are robust, strong, and reliable.

Capsule Filters

  • Opticap® XL disposable capsule filters have a unique design to minimize hold-up volume and reduce production losses and are available in a range of sizes for easy scale-up.
  • Opticap® XLT disposable T-line capsule filters are available with or without a pressure gauge port for ease in monitoring process conditions. The T-line design accommodates series or parallel filtration to match your application needs.
  • Optiscale® disposable capsule filters provide a convenient small-volume option for process development, screening and scaling.
