Background InformationSyntaxin 2 (also known as Epimorphin) is a type one single-transmembrane protein encoded by the STX2 (or EPIM) gene in human. Syntaxin 2 belongs to the syntaxin/epimorphin family of proteins mediating the targeting and fusion of intracellular transport vesicles. Several proteins are involved in membrane fusion events, including the N-ethylmaleimide (NEM)-sensitive factor (NSF), soluble NSF attachment proteins (SNAPs) and SNAP receptors (SNAREs). Syntaxin 2 is found in the plasma membrane and in intracellular vesicular structures where it functions as a target SNARE (t-SNARE). Syntaxin-2 mediates membrane fusion by pairing with a vesicle SNARE (v-SNARE) to form a "trans complex", thereby pulling the taregt and vesicle membranes together. (PMID 15943887).
