      • L4-33K
      • Splicing Factor 33K
      • Terminase small subunit
Background InformationProtein 33K (UniProt: P24940; also known as L4-33K, Splicing factor 33K, Terminase small subunit) is encoded by the L4 gene in Human adenovirus C serotype 5 (Human adenovirus 5). Adenoviruses are nonenveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses that are shown to express up to 20 distinct mRNAs from five major late transcription unit (MLTU) regions known as L1-L5. During adenovirus 5 infection, a cascade of gene expression results in the production of large amounts of the proteins needed to construct progeny virions. The virion of adenovirus contains 13 different polypeptides, which are shown to form an icosahedral capsid surrounding the genome-containing viral core. The capsid protein VI serves as a membrane lytic factor of adenovirus. In its unprocessed form it is involved in virus assembly and translocation of hexon into the nucleus. The matured capsid protein VI processed by a virion-incorporated adenoviral proteinase at its N and C-terminals. The cleaved C-terminal peptide is shown to act as a coactivator of the viral protease whereas the N-terminal region forms an amphipathic helix that is capable of membrane association and lysis. Clone 9F10 recognizes both the mature and precursor form of capsid protein VI. (Ref.: Martinez, R., et al., (2015). J. Virol. 89(4); 2121-2135; Morris, SJ., et al. (2010). J. Virol. 84(14): 7096-7104).
