      BackgroundNestin (accession no. NP_006608) is a large cytoplasmic intermediate filament protein that is a marker for neuroepithelial stem cells. Initially, nestin is expressed in neural stem cells and its expression is downregulated upon cell differentiation in astrocytes and neurons. Nestin has been used to identify stem cells in brain tumors and in malignant melanomas.
