      • Eosinophil chemotactic protein
      • Small-inducible cytokine A11
Background InformationEotaxin (UniProt: P51671; also known as C-C motif chemokine 11, Eosinophil chemotactic protein, Small-inducible cytokine A11) is encoded by the CCL11 (also known as SCYA11) gene (Gene ID: 6356) in human. Eotaxin is a potent and eosinophil-specific chemoattractant that plays a critical role in allergic and nonallergic inflammatory reactions. In response to the presence of allergens it directly promotes the accumulation of eosinophils at the site of inflammation. It is constitutively expressed in several tissues including intestine, lymphoid node, thymus, skin, heart, kidney, and mammary gland. It is a secreted protein that is synthesized with a signal peptide (aa 1-23), which is subsequently cleaved off to produce the mature form. Eotaxin is shown to be induced by TNFa, IL-1a, and IFN-g. In addition to its role in immune response, Eotaxin is also associated with aging, neurogenesis and neurodegeneration and can influence neural progenitor cells, and microglia. Its elevated circulating levels have been shown in several psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. (Ref.: Teixeira, AL., et al. (2018).
