Background InformationCD44 antigen (UniProt: P16070; also known as CDw44, Epican, Extracellular matrix receptor III (ECMR-III), GP90 lymphocyte homing/adhesion receptor, HUTCH-I, Heparan sulfate proteoglycan, Hermes antigen, Hyaluronate receptor, Phagocytic glycoprotein 1 (PGP-1), Phagocytic glycoprotein I (PGP-I)) is encoded by the CD44 (also known as LHR, MDU2, MDU3, MIC4) gene (Gene ID: 960) in human. CD44 is a Type 1 transmembrane glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion, migration, and proliferation. It also plays a role in lymphocyte activation, tumor metastasis, and wound healing. It is encoded by the CD44 gene, and it is expressed in a wide range of cell types. The protein's structure includes a hyaluronic acid (HA) binding domain, a stem region, and a variable extracellular domain. Alternative splicing may produce 19 isoforms. CD44 splice variants (CD44v) play a role in tumorigenesis and malignancy. It is also implicated in various other diseases, including autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular diseases and fibrosis.
