Background InformationCD36 is a major 88,000 MW platelet glycoprotein also found on monocytes, macrophages and some endothelial cells. It has multiple diverse roles in physiology. CD36 is a receptor for thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), functioning as an inhibitor of angiogenesis. It also binds oxidized low density lipoproteins (LDL) and shed photoreceptor outer segments. CD36 is also act an endothelial-CAM acting in platelet adhesion and aggregration. Absence of CD36 protects against the formation of arterial plaques, thus slowing the development of atherosclerosis. CD36 transcription is regulated by the nuclear receptor PPAR-gamma.
