A pentapeptide that acts as an essential extracellular death factor (EDF) for the toxin-antitoxin module mazEF-mediated cell death in E. coli cultures. The killing activity of EDF is shown to be mazEF-dependent at low concentrations, but becomes more and more mazEF-independent at concentrations higher than 200 ng/ml. Sequence analysis of E. coli genome reveals the gene products of zwf (coding glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) and ygeO as likely precursors of EDF.
