Background InformationTAF15, also known as TATA-binding protein-associated factor 2N, or 68 kDa TATA-binding protein-associated factor, or TAF(II)68, TAFII68, or RNA-binding protein 56, and encoded by the gene TAF15/RBP56/TAF2N, is a RNA and ssDNA binding protein important in transcription initiation. TAF15 aligns with the RNA polymerase II (Pol II) multiprotein complex that together with other proteins like TBP initiates transcription. TAF15 is ubiquitously expressed, and TAF15 shuttles from the nucleus to the cytoplasm upon activation; methylation of TAF15 appears to guide nuclear localization and transcriptional activity. Translocations involving the TAF15 gene may play a role in acute leukemia and extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma, and mutations in this gene are associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diseases.
