Pesticide Analysis

Comprehensive product range for your pesticide analysis methodsAround 500 known pesticides can be present in juices alone. Due to such substantial safety concerns, national and international regulations require that food and beverage manufacturers regularly test their products for pesticides.

Most pesticide analysis is done by using gas chromatography with ECD detection, for example according to EPA method 508. More modern regulations use GC-MS instead. No matter which gas chromatography method you employ, Merck always offers perfectly suited high-purity GC solvents for sample preparation.

Comprehensive Product Range for your Pesticide Analysis Methods

Our SupraSolv® ECD and FID quality is specially developed and tested for ECD (Electron Capture Detector) and FID (Flame Ionization Detector), whereas SupraSolv® MS is dedicated for use in gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometric detection. Moreover, we offer you our unique UniSolv® solvents – a truly universal solution that can be used with all of the most relevant GC detectors (GC-ECD, GC-FID, GC-MS). With Merck's comprehensive product range for pesticide analysis, you benefit from flexibility, cost-efficiency, and high reliability in standard applications as well as easier, more precise analyses in new fields such as Anastassiades' QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) method for pesticide residue analysis.

Classical Pesticide Analysis

Features and Benefits
  • Accurate, reliable and reproducible analytical results thanks to minimal signal-to-noise ratio (clear baseline) within a specified retention time range
  • High application security thanks to detector-specific tests
  • Comprehensive range of applications thanks to widest retention time range
  • Time and cost savings (no need for repeat analyses) thanks to highest batch-to-batch consistency
  • All analytes of interest for EPA method 508 are covered by the specified retention time range.

Classical pesticide analysis, e.g. according to EPA Method 508 using GC-ECD, is employed for the qualitative and quantitative determination of pesticides in food and environmental samples. This method requires solvents such as n-hexane, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane or acetone for sample preparation. SupraSolv® ECD and FID solvents from Merck are the best choice for this demanding task.
SupraSolv® ECD and FID solvents are particularly suitable for GC-ECD. Featuring very high purity, they offer a clear baseline and minimal signal-to-noise ratio within a specified retention time range. Furthermore, this retention time range covers all analytes of interest for EPA method 508, resulting in highest application security. Therefore you can be sure that no impurities will disturb your analysis. The bottom line: SupraSolv® solvents will help you to consistently achieve accurate, reliable and reproducible analysis results.

QuEChERS Method

Features and Benefits
  • Extensive application range: one solvent grade is suitable for all GC methods (GC-ECD, GC-FID and GC-MS)
  • Broader and higher specification than that of SupraSolv® (wider retention time range for ECD, lower concentration of interference signals)

The new, faster QuEChERS method for pesticide analysis according to Anastassiades ("Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe") uses GC-MS instead of ECD. This modern method makes it possible to reduce manual effort, increase sample throughput, improve analytical safety, and extend the range of detectable pesticides. The extraction agent Dichloromethane UniSolv® (106454) offers excellent dissolution properties for pesticides in juices (See Figure).

UniSolv® is the universal solution for your GC applications: Regardless of the gas chromatography method you employ (GC-ECD, GC-FID or GC-MS) and of the sample you would like to analyze (e.g. water, soil) – with UniSolv® you only need to use a single quality. Thanks to special clean-up procedures, its specification is even broader and higher than that of SupraSolv®. The specified retention time range for ECD is larger (so even low-boiling substances can be reliably detected), while the permissible concentration of interference signals within the retention time range is lower. The clear baseline and minimal signal-to-noise ratio allows you to obtain reliable and consistent analytical results – saving you additional time and cost intensive purification work.
