      DescriptionAnti-Acinar cells Antibody, clone MIC0-2A6
      Alternate Names
      • Pancreatic exocrine cells
Background InformationAcinar cells are the exocrine cells of the pancreas that synthesize and secrete digestive enzymes. Both synthesis and secretion of digestive enzymes are highly regulated over short term and long-time frames. To support their secretory function, acinar cells contain an abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. However, their size shrinks due to lack of luminal nutrients. Enzymes from acinar cells are released into a bicarbonate-rich solution secreted by the centroacinar and ductal cells and flows from the acini and acinar tubules to the intralobular ducts, then into the interlobular ducts and main duct, and finally into the duodenum at the major or minor papillae. Acinar cell growth is a major contributor to the postnatal pancreas growth min mice. Full development of acinar tissue extends into the postnatal period. In mice, pancreatic development that begins at E8.5 is largely completed by day W14.5. Acinar cells that are around islets are shown to be larger and more proliferative and it is suggested that islets communicate with adjacent acinar cells. When beta cell function is compromised in early stages of diabetes, acinar cell proliferation is reduced that lead to a gradual reduction in the size of the pancreas. Acinar cell volume is reported to vary about 9-fold among 24 mammalian species studied and exhibits an inverse correlation with the lifespan of the animal. Clone 2A6 is highly specific for acinar cells and can be used for isolation of these cells from pancreatic tissue. (Ref.: Anzi, S., et al. (2018).
