      Background InformationDNA-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit (DNA-PK catalytic subunit or DNA-PKcs), also known as DNPK1 or p460, and encoded by the gene name PRKDC or HYRC, is a nuclear protein kinase that is involved in DNA nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) required to protect and align broken ends of DNA and V(D)J recombination. DNA-PK/PRKDC must be bound to DNA to express its catalytic properties. Autophosphorylation of DNA-PK/PRKDC correlates with loss of protein kinase activity and dissociation of the DNA-PKcs-Ku complex. DNA-PK/PRKDC phosphorylates Hsp90, p53 and c-Jun.
