      DescriptionLeptin, mouse
OverviewLeptin (Anti-Obesity Protein) is the protein product of the ob (obese) gene in mice and appears to be involved in appetite control. The ob gene is expressed in adipose tissue and is thought to regulate the body's fat stores. Mice with the ob/ob genotype also develop a form of diabetes similar to type II (non-insulin dependent) diabetes. Mouse leptin is a 16 kDa protein containing 147 amino acid residues.

Specific ActivityGF050 has been shown to be biologically active in two different mouse obesity models, ob/ob and NZO. Both strains of mice were treated via intraperitoneal injection once daily at a dose of 5 μg leptin/gm of body weight for 14 days. Significant effects on body weight, food consumption, and plasma glucose levels were observed compared to saline-treated controls.
Entrez Gene SummaryThis gene encodes a protein that is secreted by white adipocytes, and which plays a major role in the regulation of body weight. This protein, which acts through the leptin receptor, functions as part of a signaling pathway that can inhibit food intake and/or regulate energy expenditure to maintain constancy of the adipose mass. This protein also has several endocrine functions, and is involved in the regulation of immune and inflammatory responses, hematopoiesis, angiogenesis and wound healing. Mutations in this gene and/or its regulatory regions cause severe obesity, and morbid obesity with hypogonadism. This gene has also been linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus development.
      UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: P41159 # May function as part of a signaling pathway that acts to regulate the size of the body fat depot. An increase in the level of LEP may act directly or indirectly on the CNS to inhibit food intake and/or regulate energy expenditure as part of a homeostatic mechanism to maintain constancy of the adipose mass.
SIZE: 167 amino acids; 18641 Da
      SUBUNIT: Interacts with SIGLEC6.
      SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted.
DISEASE:SwissProt: P41159 # Defects in LEP may be a cause of autosomal recessive obesity [MIM:601665].

      Storage and Shipping Information
Storage ConditionsThe lyophilized powder, though stable at room temperature, is best stored desiccated below 0°C for up to 12 months from date of receipt. After a quick spin, reconstitute the mouse leptin in sterile distilled water to a concentration of 1.0-5.0 mg/mL. After reconstitution maintain at -20°C in undiluted aliquots for up to six months.
