      Alternate Names
      • Lactose operon repressor
Background InformationThe lactose operon repressor binds to a regulatory element, an operator gene, to form a genetic switch, the lac operon. This switch negatively regulates the expression of structural genes that follow the site of the operator gene. Inducers may bind to the repressor to reduce or eliminate the affinity of the repressor for its operator, and thereby allow for transcription of respective structural genes. Conversely, other effector molecules may increase the binding affinity of the repressor for its operator and thereby inhibit gene transcription. The inducer or effector molecules that associate with a repressor serve as a chemical signal, which monitors the metabolic state of protein(s) expressed by their respective genes.
