Cyclodextrin HPB: A path to better API solubility and stability

Issue: Feburary 18, 2014
| Category: Bioavailability, Formulation

Merck's hydroxylpropyl-beta cyclodextrin is an ideal choice to effectively increase API solubility and stability. Due to its characteristics -- a molecule that resembles a hollow cone with a hydrophilic exterior and a more hydrophobic interior -- it can be used to bind poorly water-soluble and hydrophobic APIs. The resulting API-cyclodextrin inclusion complex generally shows an improved solubility compared to the API alone and can thus help improve the bioavailability of the API. Furthermore, by entrapping the API within, Cyclodextrin HPB may be also used to stabilize the API and protect it from degradation, which can be important for those APIs that are sensitive to oxidation, hydrolysis or sunlight.

Cyclodextrin HPB is well-suited for all dosage forms including solid, semi-solid or liquid formulations.

What's more, Cyclodextrin HPB is in compliance with the major pharmacopeias (Ph Eur, NF), supporting the regulatory acceptance of your product as well as patient safety and consistent product performance.
