DescriptionAnti-Syndecan-1 Antibody
Alternate Names
  • CD138 antigen
  • heparan sulfate proteoglycan fibroblast growth factor
    receptor
  • syndecan 1
  • syndecan proteoglycan 1
Background InformationSyndecan-1, also known as CD138, is a transmembrane (Type I) heparan sulfate proteoglycan and is a member of the syndecan proteoglycan family. The syndecans mediate cell binding, cell signaling, and cytoskeletal organization. Bearing properties of both heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate, Syndecan-1 functions as a cell surface proteoglycan membrane protein and participates in cell proliferation, cell migration and cell-matrix interactions via its receptor for extracellular matrix proteins. Altered syndecan-1 expression has been detected in several different tumor types.

Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThe protein encoded by this gene is a transmembrane (type I) heparan sulfate proteoglycan and is a member of the syndecan proteoglycan family. The syndecans mediate cell binding, cell signaling, and cytoskeletal organization and syndecan receptors are required for internalization of the HIV-1 tat protein. The syndecan-1 protein functions as an integral membrane protein and participates in cell proliferation, cell migration and cell-matrix interactions via its receptor for extracellular matrix proteins. Altered syndecan-1 expression has been detected in several different tumor types. While several transcript variants may exist for this gene, the full-length natures of only two have been described to date. These two represent the major variants of this gene and encode the same protein. [provided by RefSeq]

UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION:Cell surface proteoglycan that bears both heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate and that links the cytoskeleton to the interstitial matrix.
SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Interacts with CDCP1.
SUBCELLUAR LOCATION: Membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein.
SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the syndecan proteoglycan family.

Molecular WeightThe expected molecular weight of monomeric Syndecan-1 is ~32 kDa; however, the core protein often migrates as an SDS-stable dimer with an approximate M.W. of 77 kDa. Additionally, a high M.W. form of the protein may often be seen between 500-1000 kDa, likely the mature form of Syndecan-1, with all of its heparan and chondroitin sulfate additions. In whole tissues, this mature form often binds tightly to ECM molecules and may require solublization by urea extraction for additional SDS-PAGE analysis (Wilsie, 2006). Triton X-100 or similar mild detergents are sufficient to release the immature precursor forms of Syndecan-1.
