      Synonyms1,25-(OH)₂-D₃
DescriptionActive hormonal form of vitamin D, formed by the renal 1-hydroxylation of 25-(OH)D3. Has immunomodulatory properties in vitro and in vivo. Prevents the development of clinical diabetes in NOD mice, which are an animal model of human autoimmune diabetes. Induces reversible hydrolysis of the sphingomyelin cycle and generates ceramide. Stimulates intestinal Ca2+ and phosphate transport and mobilizes Ca2+ from bone. Involved in cellular differentiation, carcinogenesis, and insulin secretion.
