      DescriptionAnti-Peripherin Antibody, clone 7C5
      Alternate Names
      • Neurofilament 4
Background InformationPeripherin (UniProt: P21807; also known as Neurofilament 4) is encoded by the Prph (also known as Prph1) gene (Gene ID: 24688) in rat. Peripherin is a class III neuronal intermediate filament protein that is widely expressed in neurons of the peripheral nervous system. Its expression is also observed in a restricted set of brain stem and spinal cord neurons that project towards peripheral structures. Its highest expression is reported in late embryonic and early postnatal brain. Peripherin forms homodimers but can form heterodimers with neurofilament-Light, Neurofilament-medium and neurofilament-heavy with and without alpha-internexin to form filamentous network. It plays a role in the development of unmyelinated sensory neurons and may also be involved in axon elongation and axon regeneration after injury. It is also shown to Inhibit neurite extension in type II spiral ganglion neurons in the cochlea. (Ref.: Leung, CL., et al., (2004). Brain Pathol. 14(3); 290-296; Yuan, A., et al. (2012). J.
