      DescriptionPurified rabbit polyclonal antibody. Recognizes the ~50 kDa (apparent MW) PL-Scramblase protein.
      BackgroundPhospholipid scramblase (PL-scramblase) is a ~35 kDa protein that mediates the accelerated transbilayer migration of plasma membrane phospholipid in both injured and apoptotic cells. The activity of PL-scramblase and the transmembrane movement is Ca2+ dependent/ATP independent and has a marked preference for phosphatidyl serine. Other cations have been shown to substitute for Ca2+ notably Tb3+ and La3+. Both the murine and the human genes have been cloned. One key difference between the two is the short exocytoplasmic tail in the human protein compared to a membrane inserted segment in the mouse protein. Palmitoylation of PL-scramblase is required for anchoring in the cell membrane where it is localized. Notable is the activation and upregulation of PL-scramblase in response to apoptotic signals early in the apoptotic response. This activation and upregulation is required for the subsequent appearance of phosphatidyl serine on the external membrane surface of apoptotic cells. PL-scramblase also has a role in disease; a defect in the ability to activate the PL-scramblase pathway is the basis for Scott syndrome, an inherited bleeding disorder.
