Background InformationLCN2 (also known as Neurophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin or NGAL) belongs to a superfamily of lipocalins, a collection of small, diversely functional, extracellular proteins. NGAL is secreted from neutrophil granules in three different forms; a monomer of 25 kDa, a disulfide-linked homodimer at 46 kDa, and a disulfide-linked heterodimer with MMP-9 at 135-kDa. It is widely known to induce development of kidney epithelia, to bind and traffic iron, and to act as a molecular signal under inflammatory conditions, such as Crohn’s Disease. Multiple carcinoma studies have also shown elevated expression levels of LCN2 in several different human tumors affecting such organs as: colon, lung, breast, ovaries and pancreas. Additionally, there has been great interest in this protein as a possible marker for: onset of Acute Kidney Injury following cardiac surgery, the progression of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), and the survival chances of patients with Chronic Heart Failure (CHF).

UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: Transport of small lipophilic substances Potential.

SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Forms a covalently linked, disulfide-bridged heterodimer with the 92 kDa type V collagenase (MMP-9).

      SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted.

TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Expressed in bone marrow and in tissues that are prone to exposure to microorganism. High expression is found in bone marrow as well as in uterus, prostate, salivary gland, stomach, appendix, colon, trachea and lungs. Not found in the small intestine or peripheral blood leukocytes.

SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the calycin superfamily. Lipocalin family.
Molecular WeightLCN2 band observed at 25 kDa. Heavy concentration of tissue lysate and a 5 minute exposure time were used to generate the band of interest.
