SpecificityMAB88079 recognizes a protein of 70 kDa, identified as Heat Shock Factor 2 (HSF2). The synthesis of heat shock proteins is dependent on transcriptional and post-transcriptional control in eukaryotic cells. The regulation of heat shock gene transcription is mediated by the transcriptional activator, Heat Shock Factor (HSF), which binds to heat shock response elements (HSEs). At least three HSFs have been isolated from the human, mouse, chicken, and tomato genomes and an additional factor, HSF4 has been identified in humans. HSFs purified from yeast, Drosphila, and human have different molecular weights and do not cross-react immunologically. These factors are activated by distinct stimuli. HSF1 responds to cellular stress signals such as heat, heavy metals, and oxidative reagents whereas, the HSF2 is activated during differentiation. some laboratories have reported that the constitutive, non-DNA binding, monomeric form of inactive HSF1 is located in the cytoplasm. Upon activation, HSF1 is trimerized and is localized in nucleus where it binds DNA. the phosphorylation of HSF1 may be necessary for maximal transcription of heat shock genes.

      Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryHSF2, as well as the related gene HSF1, encodes a protein that binds specifically to the heat-shock element and has homology to HSFs of other species. Heat shock transcription factors activate heat-shock response genes under conditions of heat or other stresses. Although the names HSF1 and HSF2 were chosen for historical reasons, these peptides should be referred to as heat-shock transcription factors.

      UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: Q03933 # DNA-binding protein that specifically binds heat shock promoter elements (HSE) and activates transcription. In higher eukaryotes, HSF is unable to bind to the HSE unless the cells are heat shocked.
SIZE: 536 amino acids; 60348 Da
SUBUNIT: DNA-binding homotrimer in stressed or heat shocked cells, otherwise found as a homodimer.
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm. Nucleus. Note=Cytoplasmic during normal growth and moves to the nucleus upon activation.
SIMILARITY: SwissProt: Q03933 ## Belongs to the HSF family.
