Background InformationEctonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 1 (EC:3.6.1.5; UniProt P49961; also known as CD39, Ecto-apyrase, Ecto-ATP diphosphohydrolase 1, Ecto-ATPDase 1, Ecto-ATPase 1, Lymphoid cell activation antigen, NTPDase 1) is encoded by the ENTPD1 (also known as CD39, SPG64) gene (Gene ID 953) in human. CD39 is a cell surface nucleotide-metabolizing enzyme that hydrolyzes extracellular purine NTP and NDP. CD39 is a putative marker for B-cell activation and its expression is also observed on NK-cells, dendritic cells, T-cells, and vascular endothelial cells. CD39 is a known inhibitor of ADP-induced platelet aggregation and may also play a role in angiogenesis. E. coli infection is reported to induce CD39 promoter activity in macrophages, resulting in an upregulated CD39 expression during sepsis in mice, while CD39 knockdown increases mortality among mice with polymicrobial sepsis.
