Background InformationSuppressor of tumorigenicity 14 protein (UniProt: Q9Y5Y6; also known as EC:3.4.21.109, Matriptase, Membrane-type serine protease 1, MT-SP1, Prostamin Serine protease 14, Serine protease TADG-15, Tumor-associated differentially-expressed gene 15 protein) is encoded by the ST14 (also known as PRSS14, SNC19, TADG15) gene (Gene ID: 6768) in human. Matriptase is a single-pass type II membrane protein of the peptidase S1 family that displays trypsin-like activity. It cleaves various substrates with arginine or lysine at the P1 position and prefers small side-chain amino acids, such as alanine and glycine, at the P2 position. It has a cytoplasmic domain (aa 1-55), a transmembrane domain (aa 56-76), and a long extracellular domain (aa 77-855). Matriptase is shown to be over-expressed in a variety of cancers, including breast, colon, and prostate cancers. It is reported to activate hepatocytes growth factor and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) through which it directs extracellular matrix remodeling, angiogenesis and invasive growth of tumors.
