  • Helix-loop-helix protein hATH-5
Background InformationProtein atonal homolog 7 (UniProt: Q8N100; also known as Class A basic helix-loop-helix protein 13, bHLHa13, Helix-loop-helix protein hATH-5, hATH5) is encoded by the ATOH7 (also known as ATH5, BHLHA13) gene (Gene ID: 220202) in human. ATH5 is a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor with one bHLH domain (aa 40-92). It is involved in the differentiation of retinal ganglion cells and plays a central role in retinal ganglion cell and optic nerve formation. Overexpression of ATH5 among neurogenic progenitors is shown to significantly enhance the production of retinal ganglionic cells at the expense of reducing the progenitor pool. Higher levels are also reported to accelerate cell cycle progression from S to M phase and promote cell cycle exit. Mutations in ATOH7 gene are known to cause Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous that is characterized by developmental eye malformation associated with microphthalmia, cataract, glaucoma, and congenital retinal non-attachment.
