IL-1β is activated by proteolytic cleavage of the precursor molecule. Increases nitric oxide production in smooth muscle cells and suppresses apoptosis in rat ovarian follicles. Involved in inflammatory and immune responses and promotes wound healing. Induces nitric oxide synthase in insulin-producing cells. 1 µg of IL-1β corresponds to 1.9 x 105 WHO units.
