DescriptionAnti-Hexosaminidase subunit A Antibody, clone 13D12.1
Alternate Names
  • Beta-hexosaminidase subunit alpha
  • Hexosaminidase subunit A
  • Beta-N-acetylhexosaminidase subunit alpha
  • N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase subunit alpha
Background InformationBeta-hexosaminidase subunit alpha (EC 3.2.1.52; UniProt P06865; also known as Beta-N-acetylhexosaminidase subunit alpha, Hexosaminidase subunit A, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase subunit alpha) is encoded by the HEXA (also known as TSD) gene (Gene ID 3073) in human. The enzyme β-hexosaminidase is composed of two polypeptide chains designated the α- and β- subunits. β-hexosaminidase interacts with its co-factor GM2 activator protein and catalyzes the degradation of the GM2 gangliosides and other molecules containing terminal N-acetyl hexosamines. Mutations in any of the three genes coding for the two enzyme subunits and the co-factor protein are known causes of neurodegenerative autosomal recessive lysosomal storage diseases collectively known as GM2 gangliosidoses. Tay-Sachs disease (TSD) is linked to HEXA mutations, Sandhoff disease is linked to HEXB mutations, and AB-variant form is linked to GM2A mutations.
