      DescriptionAnti-VSV Matrix Protein M Antibody, clone 23H12
      Alternate Names
      • Matrix Protein Vesicular stomatitis virus
      • VSIV Matrix protein
Background InformationMatrix protein from Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) (UniProt: P03519; also known as Protein M) is encoded by the M gene (Gene ID: 1489833) in Vesicular stomatitis Indiana virus. VSV belongs to the Rhabdoviridae family and two distinct serotypes of this virus have been described the New Jersey and Indiana type. It is an enveloped, negative-sense RNA virus that mainly infects a variety domestic animals and causes vesiculation, ulceration, and erosion of the oral and nasal mucosa and epithelial surface of the tongue. The genomic structure of this virus is a single strand of negative-sense RNA that is composed of five genes known as N, P, M, G, and L that represent the nucleocapsid protein, phosphoprotein, matrix protein, glycoprotein, and the large protein, which is a component of the viral RNA polymerase. The matrix protein (M) is a homomultimeric protein that plays a major role in assembly and budding of virion, by recruiting cellular partners of the ESCRT complexes. It is also responsible for most of the cytopathic effects observed in infected cells. M protein is reported to interfere with the transport of cellular mRNAs from the nucleus to the cytoplasm and modulate the redistribution of the splicing factor. It can shut off cellular protein expression by inhibiting mRNA nuclear export through direct interaction with host RAE1-NUP98 complex. This shutoff inhibits interferon signaling and establishes an antiviral state in virus infected cells. M protein contains a dynamin binding motif (aa 2-4); a PPXY motif (aa 24-27), and a PTAP/PSAP motif (aa 37-40). The latter two motifs are reported to contribute to virus egress from infected cells. Interaction between these motifs and ESCRT pathway components are also essential for viral assembly. (Ref.: Redondo, N., et al. (2015). PLoS ONE 10(6): e0131137; D'agostino, PM., et al. (2009).
