Background InformationAnterior gradient protein 2 homolog (AGR2) (also known as secreted cement gland protein XAG-2 homolog) is thought to be a metastasis-inducing protein in breast cancer models and may be used as a means of detecting the outcome of hormonally treated patients with breast cancer. AGR2 may also play an important role in intestinal mucus production. Recent researched has also linked AGR2 to metastasis. Lower levels of AGR expression in prostate cancer may be highly predictive of the reoccurrence of disease even after a prostatectomy.

UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: Required for MUC2 post-transcriptional synthesis and secretion. May play a role in the production of mucus by intestinal cells (By similarity). Proto-oncogene that may play a role in cell migration, cell differentiation and cell growth.

SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Interacts with LYPD3 and DAG1 (alphaDAG1). Interacts with MUC2; disulfide-linked.

SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted. Endoplasmic reticulum (By similarity).

TISSUE SPECIFICTY: Expressed strongly in trachea, lung, stomach, colon, prostate and small intestine. Expressed weakly in pituitary gland, salivary gland, mammary gland, bladder, appendix, ovary, fetal lung, uterus, pancreas, kidney, fetal kidney, testis, placenta, thyroid gland and in estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer cell lines.

SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the AGR family.
