      Background InformationMotile sperm domain-containing protein 2 (UniProt: Q8NHP6; also known as MOSPD2 is encoded by the MOSPD2 gene (Gene ID: 158747) in human. MOSPD2 is a single-pass FFAT-motif (two phenylalanines (FF) in an acidic track (AT)) interacting membrane protein. It binds to FFAT motif via its major sperm protein (MSP) domain (aa 327-445). MOSPD2 is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-anchored protein that interacts with several FFAT-containing tether proteins from endosomes, mitochondria, and Golgi and mediate the formation of contact sites between the ER and these organelles. MOSPD2 is highly expressed in CD14+ monocytes and at lower levels in neutrophils. Its expression is not observed in B- and T- cells. It is reported to promote migration of primary monocytes and neutrophils, in response to various chemokines. It consists of three structural domains: an N-terminal CRAL/TRIO domain that is involved in small lipophilic molecule binding, a MSP domain, and a carboxyl terminal transmembrane domain. Two isoforms of MOSPD2 have been described that are produced by alternative splicing. (Ref.: Di Mattia, T., et al. (2018). EMBO Rep.19(7): e45453).
